Looking for a trip to Spain but don’t know where to begin? Spain is a sought-after European destination in recent years because of its history, culture, landscape, and its welcoming people.

Additionally, it is the second-largest country in the European Union, and second-most visited country largely due to its 49 World Heritage landmarks.

There is something for everyone, for the young and not so young; for the adventurous or laid back, romantics, or not, you won’t be disappointed – you’ll be blown away.

For the Omni-Type Traveler

If you’re the type of traveler who wants to visit a do-it-all type of city or are confined to a shorter vacation schedule, then the capital of Spain will check off a lot of boxes.

Madrid

Madrid is Spain’s largest city and is also its main financial and cultural center. In addition to its famous museums, Madrid’s busy streets are dotted with all kinds of shops, restaurants with world renowned cuisine and spectacular nightlife. This is also a great destination to see a Flamenco show!

Here you'll also find traditional century-old bars where friends meet up for a drink and cultural centers that you must see. Walking around Madrid means coming across iconic spots such as the stunning Royal Palace.

Do you like to try international cuisine? It is always an ideal time to enjoy a vibrant urban atmosphere when dining. Options are many in Madrid, but you have to try the tapas or paella,  the national dish of Spain.

Enjoy a brunch in the numerous enclosed glass terraces, courtyards, or rooftops. Perhaps adding a guided cultural tour might be right up your alley?

Be sure to ask one of Riverdale Travel’s expert consultants about the options that speak to you!

Romantic Escapes

Spain has many destinations – all very different – which you’ll fall in love with at first sight. It’s an ideal destination for sharing with your significant other.

Mallorca (Majorca)

Mallorca is an island paradise located off the mainland which will transcend you. Here you’ll find coves of turquoise water so unbelievably clear that it looks unreal.

You and your partner can visit lighthouses with endless views and share the unforgettable sunsets. There’s a romantic vibe on the largest of these Balearic Islands, a place of idyllic landscapes where the mountains are just steps away from the beach.

Canary Islands

Did you know that the Canary Islands are not only part of Spain, but they are a favorite destination for honeymooners and couples? And that’s no surprise as these incredible volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean are full of romance.

Together you’ll enjoy fairy-tale forests, beautiful beaches, and quaint  little villages where you can relax and unwind.

They’re also home to four national parks, two of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Foodie & Wine Connoisseur

Spanish cuisine is famous all over the world due to its healthy, traditional and creative, savory cuisine. Even though you can experience great Spanish cuisine throughout many parts, here are a couple of suggestions.

Barcelona

This gem overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, and is famous for Art Nouveau architecture, making Barcelona one of Europe’s trendiest cities.

Culinary options satisfy any palate from traditional Catalan dishes to a variety of unique eateries that will test your aroma sensors.

Inland Spain: Castile and Leon

Wine enthusiasts will love the Ribera del Duero wine route in northwest Spain, which runs through four provinces in Castile and Leon; Burgos, Segovia, Soria and Valladolid. It covers a length of 70 miles with the Duero River along the way.

Underground wine cellars will take visitors back in time to the origins of wine, the tradition of wine-producing families, and the vastness of the cultural heritage and natural landscapes – all of this make this journey an unforgettable experience.

Adventurous and Artsy

Try Pamplona, which is in northern Spain and only about an hour from the French border. This city is most famous for being the home of the famous Running of the Bulls festival and has so much more to offer.

Pamplona is actually surrounded by some of the best preserved city walls in Europe. The original walls and fortifications date as far back as Roman times.

Many fabulous museums and various historical landmarks dot the landscape, and Ernest Hemingway spent a lot of time here. There’s even a statue of Hemingway sitting at the bar in the historic Café Iruña.

The Camino de Santiago also runs through the city, for those who love to take long hikes and explore.
